Praying a Station of the Cross with some children today left me feeling blessed, when just as we started to pray an elderly gentleman approached our little group. He told us that he had been in the church this past Wednesday and heard us singing the ‘Kumba ya’ song at the end of our Station. He thought he’d come over to tell us what a special song that is, and that the words come from East Africa. He then told us that the words mean, ‘Don’t pass me by, Lord’. What a difference this makes to the singing of that song! So much more meaningful. The beauty in this encounter for me stems from comes the fact that the children met someone who took the time to share, and it also brought home to them that what we do as Christians don’t go unnoticed by others. We will be discussing this little encounter again to be sure, and delve in the meaning our chat with this stranger. Perhaps we will discuss the meaning of being part of something greater that us? A faith that expects us as Christians to share what we know, to help each other grow in our community, and to bring meaning to why we do what we do. This will stay with me forever.
