Passion for truth – a very English Saint
Below, is a prayer written by St. John Henry Newman that exemplifies the depth of his devotion to our Lord Jesus. A perfect prayer for this time of celebration at the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost as well as for Christians to use as part of their daily prayer.
Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly,
That my life may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through me, and be so in me
That every soul I come in contact with
May feel Your presence in my soul.
Let them look up and see no longer me, but only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine,
So to shine as to be a light to others;
The light, O Jesus will be all from You; none of it will be mine;
It will be you, shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise You the way You love best, by shining on those around me.
Let me preach You without preaching, not by words but by my example,
By the catching force of the sympathetic influence of what I do,
The evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.
Amen. (St John Henry Newman 1801-1890)
Newman’s efforts for renewal in the Anglican Church led him to become Roman Catholic. His conversion contributed to the conversion of many Anglicans who read his works and admired his example. Today, Newman also serves as a guide for many, not only those who will eventually convert to the Roman Catholic Church, but to all who are seeking the Truth.
It was the passionate contemplation of truth which also led him to a liberating acceptance of the authority which has its roots in Christ, and to the sense of the supernatural which opens the human mind and heart to the full range of possibilities revealed in Christ. (Passion for Truth)
Pope John Paul II wrote to the Archbishop of Birmingham:
“Newman was born in troubled times which knew not only political and military upheaval but also turbulence of soul. Old certitudes were shaken, and believers were faced with the threat of rationalism on the one hand and fideism on the other. Rationalism brought with it a rejection of both authority and transcendence, while fideism turned from the challenges of history and the tasks of this world to a distorted dependence upon authority and the supernatural. In such a world, Newman came eventually to a remarkable synthesis of faith and reason which were for him “like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth” (Fides et ratio, Introduction; cf. ibid., n. 74). (Passion for Truth)
In 1991, Pope St John Paul II declared that John Henry Newman had lived all of the Christian virtues in a heroic degree and would be called by the title “Venerable”.
In 2001, John Sullivan, a 62-year-old Boston man, who had asked Venerable Newman for his intercession, was miraculously cured from lumbar disc disease that had produced severe pain and incapacity to walk. A study by physicians concluded that there was no medical explanation for the man’s instantaneous cure, and in 2009, the Holy See approved the cure as a miracle attributed to the intercession of Venerable Newman. This miraculous cure opened the way for the Roman Catholic Church’s formal recognition of Newman’s sanctity. Like Pope Leo XIII’s elevation of Newman to the dignity of Cardinal this event has filled the English people with pride and joy. We expect that it will foster great interest in Newman’s life and works and hope that it will usher a new spring in the re-evangelization of the English-speaking world, and in particular of Great Britain.
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI, a long time admirer of Newman, proclaimed him as one of the blessed (Saints) in Heaven during a visit to England.

A special flavour to the month of May.
The month of May is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The feast of Our Lady of Fatima is celebrated on the 13th and the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on the 31st.
I came across this blog that boasts these magnificent vintage Holy /Prayer cards. So for the month of May , I will be posting some of them to feast my eyes on. It ‘ll be a good opportunity too, to use them as a means to meaningful prayer.

Mother of God, help me to accept the duties set before me as a loving mother and in so doing, emulate your humility and obedience.

I don’t see the road ahead of me…
Below is Thomas Merton’s infamous prayer . It speaks of surrendering to God, in every way. I am so moved every time I read these words. I am inspired both by Merton’s honesty and humility (and how much I connect with his words), as well as the graciousness of God that Merton points to. As a worker in God’s vineyard, I think this prayer is good to keep close at hand. This prayer expresses the peace that comes from knowing and trusting in God’s presence in a life with so many unknowns and irresolvable conflicts.
This prayer acknowledges that, despite our human tendency to think we know what life is about and how we can manage it, we really have no clue.
“The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” (Prov 16:9)
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think that I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always
though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

Alongside Our Lady during Advent.
I have included the two Christmas Novenas I will be praying during Advent 2013.
The’ St. Andrew’ Novena has nothing to do with the Saint, but for the fact that the novena is started on the 30th of November (St. Andrew’s feast day) and said 15 times per day until Christmas Eve.
(I like this one as I’m going to be praying for a personal intention .)
I want to pray the Christmas Novena, as it will serve to prepare me for the Feast of Christmas, and keep me focussed on the Truth about this Festive Season.
Are there any prayers you take comfort in praying during Advent?

An invitation to young Catholics.
Herewith detail (as copied from the Zenit of the Pope’s message to the Catholic youth on his visit to the UK in 2010:-
“In these few moments that we are together, I wish to speak to you from my own heart, and I ask you to open your hearts to what I have to say,” Benedict XVI said.
He stated: “I ask each of you, first and foremost, to look into your own heart.
“Think of all the love that your heart was made to receive, and all the love it is meant to give. After all, we were made for love.”
“Every day we should thank God for the love we have already known,” the Pope asserted, “for the love that has made us who we are, the love that has shown us what is truly important in life.”
He continued, “We need to thank the Lord for the love we have received from our families, our friends, our teachers, and all those people in our lives who have helped us to realize how precious we are, in their eyes and in the eyes of God.”
Enduring
“We were also made to give love,” the Pontiff affirmed, “to make it the inspiration for all we do and the most enduring thing in our lives.”
“Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the great Missionary of Charity, reminded us that giving love, pure and generous love, is the fruit of a daily decision,” he noted.
“Every day we have to choose to love,” the Holy Father urged, “and this requires help, the help that comes from Christ, from prayer and from the wisdom found in his word, and from the grace which he bestows on us in the sacraments of his Church.”
“I ask you to look into your hearts each day to find the source of all true love,” he said. “Jesus is always there, quietly waiting for us to be still with him and to hear his voice.”
Benedict XVI said: “Deep within your heart, he is calling you to spend time with him in prayer.
“But this kind of prayer, real prayer, requires discipline; it requires making time for moments of silence every day. Often it means waiting for the Lord to speak.”
“Even amid the “busy-ness” and the stress of our daily lives,” he acknowledged, “we need to make space for silence, because it is in silence that we find God, and in silence that we discover our true self.”

Our Lady of Walsingham, pray for us!
The Roman Catholic National Shrine, Walsingham.
The Shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham was established in 1061. For detailed information look here.
Pray for England.
O Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of God and our most gentle Queen and Mother,
look down in mercy upon England thy “Dowry” and upon us all who greatly hope and trust in thee.
By thee it was that Jesus our Saviour and our hope was given unto the world;
and He has given thee to us that we might hope still more.
Plead for us thy children, whom thou didst receive and accept at the foot of the cross.
O sorrowful Mother! intercede for our separated brethren, that with us in the one true fold they may be united to the supreme Shepherd, the Vicar of thy Son.
Pray for us all, dear Mother, that by faith fruitful in good works we may all deserve to see and praise God, together with thee, in our heavenly home. Amen.

Prayer for the month of December: be prepared.
By the 16th December we’ll be well into Advent and I think this Novena will serve to enhance our Advent sentimentality, our prayer-life and praise to God.
Novena For Advent
O Lord Jesus Christ, who for our sake descended from the throne of glory to this world of pain and sorrow; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; Make our hearts a fit habitation for you. Beautify and fill us with all spiritual graces, and possess us wholly by your power. Give us grace to prepare for your coming with deep humility, to receive you with burning love, and to hold fast to you with a firm faith; that we may never leave nor forsake you. Who lives and reigns, world without end. Amen
Here say one of the antiphons below, according to the day.
Then say:
OUR FATHER
HAIL MARY
Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
